Branch Projects & Programs MTAC-WLA Branch Projects Further information, details, and updates may be obtained by contacting the appropriate Branch Project Chair. ADJUDICATED PRIVATE SOLO RECITALS give students an opportunity to perform memorized programs. “Red Seal” Certificates are presented to students who prepare a 15-minute program and “Gold Seal Certificates” are presented to students who prepare a 30-minute program. BACH FESTIVAL (Southern California Junior Bach Festival) stimulates interest in and appreciation for the music of the Baroque period. It is appropriate for students at all levels of musical advancement. A maximum of 35 percent of the students who perform works by J.S. Bach may be selected to represent the WLA Branch at the Southern California Junior Bach Regional Festival. CON BRIO NEWSLETTER is published bi-monthly online, September through June, by the WLA Branch. Typed information must be received by the Editor, preferably by e-mail, on or before the 15th of the month prior to publication. CONCERTO COMPETITION (Westside Music Foundation Robert Turner Piano Concerto Competition) gives talented piano students an opportunity to perform a movement of a selected piano concerto with the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra. CONCERTO COMPETITION (Westside Music Foundation Santa Monica College Concerto Competition for Instrumentalists and Vocalists) gives talented (non-piano) students an opportunity to perform a movement of a concerto or aria with the Santa Monica College Symphony Orchestra. CONTEMPORARY FESTIVAL gives students the opportunity to perform solo and ensemble music in a formal recital setting. Students are presented with a participation award (certificate, ribbon, medal, or trophy). The festival also features a lecture/recital by a guest artist. MUSICALES FOR ADULT STUDENTS (Avocational) provide a warm and informal setting in which adult students may become acquainted and gain confidence by performing for each other and for their teachers. (see pp. 24-25 for guidelines and application form) MUSICLINK FOUNDATION is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to providing partial- to full-scholarship music lesson opportunities to musically promising students who are economically disadvantaged. MusicLink links volunteer teachers to provide lessons to nominated students who demonstrate financial need. MusicLink also provides teachers and students with grant and camp scholarship opportunities, and has numerous business affiliates all over the country who help to provide instrument, equipment, and music discounts and donations for MusicLink students and teachers. MUSIC STUDENTS’ SERVICE LEAGUE (MSSL) is a group of MTAC student volunteers dedicated to serving their community through music. MSSL projects include student performances at senior citizen homes, mentoring younger students, and volunteering at MTAC functions. ROMANTIC FESTIVAL gives students the opportunity to perform (adjudicated) solo and ensemble music in a formal recital setting. Students are presented with a participation award (certificate, ribbon, medal, or trophy). The festival also features a lecture by a guest speaker. SOLO COMPETITION (Alice Frazier Kitchen Memorial Scholarship Competition) is geared toward the most gifted students (all instruments and voice) of WLA Branch members. Winners are presented in recital at the June General Meeting and receive cash scholarship awards. STUDENT BRANCH RECITAL features students of WLA Branch members in public solo and ensemble performance. TEACHERS’ PREVIEW RECITAL SERIES give teachers an opportunity to perform on stage in a formal recital setting. TEACHERS’ ROUND TABLES provide a forum in which to develop higher pedagogical standards and to aid in the solution of teaching problems. TEACHERS’ WORKS-in-PROGRESS CLASSES give teachers an opportunity to share and discuss repertoire in an informal living room or home studio setting. WESTSIDE MUSIC FOUNDATION promotes musical culture and the pursuit of excellence in the field of music education in the West Los Angeles community for people of all socio-economic backgrounds. WMF works to provide educational opportunities to the public, with a particular emphasis on youth programs, to promote the importance of music, and to help others develop appreciation, understanding, skill, and proficiency in music through music education. Our goal is to provide high-quality musical education opportunities, particularly to youth who otherwise do not have access to top-caliber teachers and musicians as mentors due to financial means or lack of exposure due to socio-economic background. YOUNG ARTIST GUILD (YAG) or YOUNG COMPOSERS GUILD (YCG) RECITALS showcase the most talented Certificate of Merit™ and Composers Today students from the State. All performers are 5-year members of the prestigious semi-professional MTAC Young Artist Guild or Young Composers Guild. |
